Currently checking out Soul Mining, by Daniel Lanois. This book is everything I was hoping it would be: a behind the scenes look at producing some of my favorite albums, a look at the gear Lanois is fond of using, and best of all, a philosophical treatise on what is required to make masterpieces. Very recommended reading.

The ambient series, is more than a collection of recordings, it’s a way of being.

Certain records transcend music to become manifestos on life. The first Ramones album. Talking Heads ‘77. Roxy Music’s Avalon.

These are as much philosophical and aesthetic statements about the way one should live as they are albums. The ambient Series is maybe the best example of this simply because these records transport you immediately and completely into a state of mind that’s at once relaxed and refreshed – contemplative, but not complicated. In other words, perfect.
